This is going to be a two part post (part 2 is here), covering my thoughts and ideas about the current series of Doctor Who.
Mmm, the title probably already covered all of that, but anyway, the first part of the post will cover my ideas about just what is going on in the story, the second one my thoughts about the direction/quality of the new series.
Both of these posts are going to have details of the stories, so in the words of River Song, ‘spoilers!’
So just what is going on in this series?
Well here are a few ideas that I have had. Some of these are based on the premiss that Steven Moffat likes to have apparently throwaway lines in one story, that turn out to have deep significance in a later story.
From ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ episode know that ‘a time lords body is a miracle’ and a single cell would have a huge value to the right race.
Well at the end of last nights, ‘The Rebel Flesh’, episode we have more than just a single cell running around, we have a whole Doctor! Is this a full time lord duplicate of the Doctor with all of the time lord powers?
From last weeks episode, ‘The Doctors Wife’, we know that a much speculated about idea is possible. That idea is that a time lords regeneration can change it’s sex. The line is one about The Corsair always having a tattoo some where in his or her body.
Put these two ideas together and maybe the girl we saw regenerating at the end of ‘Day of the Moon’ is in fact the Doctor him self, or at least a copy of him.
A question, this one rather than a thought.
Who was in the astronaut suit at the beginning of ‘The Impossible Astronaut’? Remember this part of the story was set now. We know that the little girl was in during the 1969 and that she broke out of it. Could it be a later version of the Doctor. If so why does he shot him self to start a regeneration and then to kill him self in the middle of that regeneration? (see this post about these three shots and where they came from)
The words spoken by the TARDIS as her human form died, ‘The only water in the forest is the river’. What does this mean?
Okay, well the river, I think this is obvious, we are talking about Dr River Song here. What about the forest part? Well there are two possibilities here. We first met River in a forest of the dead, on the library planet and don’t forget, while her body died there, she was copied in the library computer just before that. So there is a copy of River Song and all she knows there. Okay the planet is protected by the Vashta Nerada, so getting to the copy might be tricky!
It’s also possible that the forest could be referring to the forest in the crashed starship Asgard from last seasons Episode ‘Time of Angels’.
We that’s some of the ideas I’ve had about just what might be going on in the series. I’m sure I’ve missed some important points, which probably means these idea’s are wide of the mark, but only time will tell.
Now for the next post about what I think the series so far…
