Well theres a title for you!
I am here, of course writing about the current controversy about sub-standard silicone rubber used in some breast implants.
As soon as this story surfaced, I was sure at some point that the question of wether implants in the UK should be removed by the National Health Service.
Well it seems that question has now come up (and yes it had to be the Daily Mail which asks it doesn’t it?)
My opinion on this was at first no way! The procedures are mostly done for purely cosmetic reasons and so why should the replacement or removal of these take money away from vital lifesaving work that the NHS has to do. And in fact I still mostly think this. However, there is always another side to things. In this case, if the leaking implants can cause cancer (and at this point that is not really clear), then the treatment of that cancer is likely to fall to the NHS. So the question is how many cancer cases are likely to be caused (probably impossible to work out with any real accuracy) and what is the likely cost of treating these cases?
It sounds very cold to be talking about these things in simple terms of monetary cost, but in a less than ideal world resources are always limited and the moment the resource which seems to be most important is money. Sad but true.
Anyway, ultimately I think that you have to think very carefully about putting anything ‘alien’ inside your body and unless there are sound medical reasons for doing this, I don’t think I could justify doing it to my self (not that this is every likely to be an issue for me!)
So that’s the first part of my title covered, what about the rest of it?
Well, I am a little confused. It seems that the ‘photoshoping’ of photos of models in magazines is frowned upon and creates unrealistic standards of beauty, yet things like breast implants and even simple makeup are not. To me all three are basically the same, they all create the same effect. The only difference is that makeup, probably can’t cause cancer and photoshopping certainly doesn’t.
