Geek Brief is back!

A while back, 4 days out of 5 I would get back from work, have dinner and the next thing I would do would be to watch the Geek Brief podcast. It was required viewing, it was as simple as that!
Sadly, a lot of things changed (all for the worse) and I didn’t like what it had become, so I un-subscribed.
Fast forward to today and we have Gadget Report TV, the real successor to Geek Brief.

My email system

I came across this interesting story on lifehacker today, about organising email.
This story was very satisfying to me since it seems to confirm that the system I use at work, is actually the right way to go.
So how do I manage email?

Unsocial me

Last week, Google’s next attempt at breaking in to the social network market, Google+ exploded on to the internet.
I tweeted at the time, that I couldn’t be less excited about this news. Does this make me a grumpy, unsocial old(-ish!) man?

WIPO Broadcast Treaty is back!

WIPO’s Broadcast Treaty is back: copyright nuts want to steal the public domain, kill Creative Commons, and give copyright over your videos to YouTube and other streamers.

Aargh!
Why they try to force through these sorts of treaties. Okay yes actually I know why they do, because big business put pressure on them to do so.
And in this case I can see one good reason for this, it gives them someone to sue when copywrited material is posted on a web site and in actual fact I don’t have problem with this. Remember I work in the film and TV industry now, so my wages are dependent on the company I work for be able to sell it’s works. What worries me is that this treaty would apparently give a web site rights to works released under CC licences, again something I’m interested in since I release all my works under these. I’m not even sure if it is legally valid to re-licence a work under a more restrictive license once it has been released under a less restrictive one.
That’s one for the lawyers a I guess, but it is still worrying.

A change in direction?

Time for some changes to my blog!
Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be bad news for any regular visitors out there…

Twitter tells third-party devs to stop making Twitter client apps

Twitter tells third-party devs to stop making Twitter client apps

In a statement issued today by Twitter on its official developer mailing list, the company informed third-party developers that they should no longer attempt to build conventional Twitter client applications. In a move to increase the ‘consistency’ of the user experience, Twitter wants more control over how its service is presented to users in all contexts.

IE 9 is here

At heart a Mac guy, but I work in a 95% Windows environment (but that is shifting towards Mac) and I have to realise that most of the world isn’t.
So I have to take notice of the Windows world and in fact I like Windows 7. And of course the big news in the Windows world this week is the release of the first beta of IE 9.
